TMJ Symptoms
...... Misunderstood and Misdiagnosed
Susan, a 40 year old mother enters the doctors office complaining of frequent headaches in the area of her temples. She notes eye pain and a ringing in her ears and pain in the muscles of her temple area , jaw joint, and face. Her neck and shoulders are stiff and feels dizzy and cannot get a restful nights sleep. She goes to say the headaches and neck pains began shortly after a car accident she was involved 3 years ago. She finds is very difficult to chew and often hears her jaw make noises like Rice Crispies----snap, crackle, and pop!

Can her symptoms be related to her jaw ?

There are 68 pairs of muscles above and below the jaws. Together these muscles are in 24 hour use in speaking, swallowing, eating, breathing and maintaining the head upright on the shoulders.

TMJ is not only felt in the joint itself but results in pain in many of these associated muscles. It's a bit like having a stone in your shoe, not only does your foot hurt, but your ankles, legs and back become painful as the body tries to keep off the painful spot.

Typical Symptoms:

  • Clicking, popping, or grating sounds in the jaw joints when opening or closing the mouth
  • Pain in or around the joints of the jaw
  • Radiating pain to the face, neck or shoulders
  • Eye pain
  • Locking or limited opening of the jaw - unable to open mouth more than one/half to one inch wide
  • Facial pain
  • Frequent headaches
  • Earaches not associated with an infection and/or a feeling of fullness in one or both ears
  • A ringing in the ears
  • Neck or shoulder pain
  • Grinding sounds
  • Dizziness
  • Excessive wear on teeth
  • Severe pain all over head
  • A sudden, major change in the way the upper and lower teeth fit together
  • Tingling or numbness in arms and fingers
  • Hissing, buzzing or roaring sounds in the ears (Tinnitis)
  • Sensitivity to light
TMJ dysfunction causes widespread and variable pains. The Journal of the American Medical Association describes it as the 'great impostor because it mimicks many different diseases and has such a wide variety of symptoms'
